Choose Wisely is the RSPCA's campaign to get hens out of cages. It's called Choose Wisely because whether you're a restaurant or a household, your choices can make a difference to hens.
Choose Wisely restaurants have agreed to serve cage-free eggs wherever they can in their businesses. We're asking customers to not only support those restaurants but to also keep cage-free in mind when they're doing their weekly grocery shop.
To find a Choose Wisely restaurant or to register your restaurant visit our Choose Wisely website.
Caged hens lead miserable lives
There is overwhelming scientific evidence to support the RSPCA’s view that hens do not belong in cages. Frustrated from an inability to express natural behaviours as simple as scratching in the dirt, caged hens suffer chronically throughout their short lives. 11.6 million hens live like this in Australia today, existing in less space each than an A4 piece of paper.
We believe hens should be able to:
- scratch in the dirt
- forage for food
- lay their eggs in a nest
- stretch out and flap their wings
- perch and dustbathe
- socialise freely
- be protected from the elements and predators
The RSPCA wants battery cages banned by law and all hens moved into well-managed barn or free-range systems.
