The RSPCA movement in Australia began in Melbourne, Victoria
on 4 July 1871. The movement spread quickly to Tasmania (1872),
New South Wales (1873), South Australia (1875), Queensland
(1883), Western Australia (1892) and later to the Australian
Capital Territory (1955) and the Northern Territory (1965).
The State bodies were brought together in 1954 under a common
title, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals, and in 1980 the national body, RSPCA Australia Inc. was
formed.
The federal body ensures that the RSPCA movement in Australia
has a national focus and a unified approach to animal welfare
problems.
