Consumer watchdog CHOICE has given the RSPCA Paw of Approval a big thumbs up in its latest review of food labelling. The recommendation provides a further guarantee to consumers who are looking for higher welfare food but who are also increasingly confused by the myriad of labels in the supermarket.

The human and animal deaths resulting from the sinking of live animal export ship, the Danny F 11, are sadly the latest in a long line of disasters at sea for the international trade in live animals. 28,000 cattle and sheep drowned and half of the 83 crew members are still unaccounted for.

The Mayor of Dubbo has urged a rethink of Australia's involvement in the live sheep export trade after 300 jobs were cut from the local meatworks. The RSPCA has echoed the calls, saying every sheep sent overseas for slaughter takes Australian jobs with it.

The RSPCA is elated at the news that jumps racing will be banned in Victoria from 2011. The RSPCA has worked for 30 long years to have the cruel ‘sport’ of jumps racing banned and today’s decision is a huge relief for all involved - but most importantly - it's a tremendous win for horse welfare.

What seems to have been lost in this whipping debate is that this issue is actually about the horse. It's about whether or not there is any room in Australian society in 2009 for a horse to be whipped on a race track for sport. The horse is the sole reason the RSPCA is involved.
